HISTORY:
But she didn't heed her father's words. True to his word, as she matured, her friend aged. While she gained strength, he lost it. Her protector was slowly becoming the one that needed to be protected. He was breaking her heart, just a little bit each day. While he merely smiled and laughed at the pain, she grimaced. Though she desired to be beside him, Deirdre found herself wandering farther and farther away from him to avoid the truth of his impending death. This death was harder than the death of her father. Her companion was a part of her--in her mind, he was her better half.
During one of her wanderings, her companion collapsed and was unable to get up on his legs. When she returned, he was there, just barely awake. He smiled at her, and she frowned in disappointment at him. How could he be so accepting of his fate? Why did he not try to fight it? Questions like those and many others swarmed in her head and bubbled beneath the surface of her furry coat as anger and denial.
"You know what is to come," he muttered in his rasp voice. He sounded as if he were grasping and fighting for every word. "And I am sorry. I did not mean to put you through this hurt. Even now, i consider myself your protector. I am sorry for failing you." The old stallion sighed.
"Then you should have left me," Deirdre snorted.
He looked up to her with eyes as heavy as the world. "I would have, but I was waiting in line for you. I did not know that I would spend my whole life waiting for you. 'Tis okay. It does not change us," he whispered to the ground. "In my mind, you are my mate, Deirdre. I knew that since we were young and reckless. 'Tis the reason I never left you on your own. Though there are many possibilities that I could have shared with you, I am content to have spent my life with you. If I could I could trade my strong will for strength and life, I would so that I could be beside you 'till you were old and weary and ready for death."
She didn't say a word for long moments, but when Deirdre did, they were the truth. "Your kind lives too short for me... You will be my first and last friend aside from my own kind. This, I regret for I have enjoyed your company far too much for my own safety. When you discover how to live as long as I do, I will look upon you differently. I will be your soulmate on this plane of existence and the next."
She abruptly left him to die alone in that frigid forest. True to her words, Deirdre has avoided all contact with any species but her own. Sadly, there are fewer dracoquine in this world than she imagined. Loneliness is now her companion, and it replays all of her fondest memories while breaking her heart. This she shall settle for if it means avoiding the tragedy of watching those around her wither and wilt like summer flowers during fall.
